About Sildenafil (Viagra)
Sildenafil (Viagra) has become the first oral treatment against erectile dysfunction (impotence) to be licensed in India and the rest world. This “fact sheet” provides you with an overview of what Sildenafil is, and what it does. Should you have any questions please contact your doctor for further information.
What Is SILDENAFIL?
Sildenafil is listed under a subgroup of type 5 inhibitors known as phosphodiesterase. It looks like a blue diamond, and is taken orally to help men who are suffering from erectile dysfunction. It will not increase sex drive and is not considered an aphrodisiac.
How Does Sildenafil Work?
Sildenafil helps allow the blood vessels in the penis to relax allowing more blood to flow into the penis providing a better environment for an erection to occur. This drug only helps when a man is sexually stimulated in some way. It should never be taken by anyone who is not currently suffering from ED as it can cause unwanted side effects.
How do you take Sildenafil?
Sildenafil is available in three doses, 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg. The initial dose is selected by your doctor based on a variety of factors and pre-conditions. Sildenafil works best when taken on an empty stomach 30 minutes prior to sexual activity. Though the time until full effectiveness varies in patients, it is normally between 20 minutes to one hour. One pill should last anywhere from 1 to 6 hours allowing the patient to have multiple erections during this time. These results vary based on factors such as consuming the pill while taking alcohol or after a large meal. For maximum results, alcohol should not be consumed in large amounts while taking Sildenafil. And, Sildenafil should only be used as directed by your doctor, and not mixed with any other medications you may be taking. For more information, please consult your doctor.
What Are The Side Effects?
After over 4000 drug tests during 21 clinical trials, the side effects experienced by test subjects were almost always mild in severity and short in length as long as they took the recommended dosage. The most common side effects are: headaches and a flushing of the face. Less common side effects are: indigestion, stuffy nose, and very rarely a vision problem causing things to appear blue.
Who Shouldn’t Take Sildenafil?
A person deemed not fit for sexual activity by a doctor should not take Sildenafil. Any patient concurrently taking nitrate medications should also not take Sildenafil as the mixing of these two drugs can cause one serious harm. One could start to have seriously low blood pressure if taking these two medications simultaneously. Please consult your doctor to make sure that Sildenafil is ok for you.
SILDENAFIL and Poppers
Some people use non-prescribed nitrates socially or sexually. These are most commonly known as “poppers” and should never be taken in combination with Sildenafil as the results could be fatal.
Sildenafil (Viagra) and Protease Inhibitors
If used while taking anti HIV drugs known as protease inhibitors such as Ritonavir, abnormally high blood pressure can occur along with other severe side effects if taking high doses of the Sildenafil.
Studies show that low doses do not cause any harm. It is recommended that one should not take more than 25mg of Sildenafil every 48 hours. For more information please consult a doctor.
Patients With Pre-Existing Conditions and Sildenafil:
People with the following conditions should not take Sildenafil without consulting a doctor: hypertension, heart of liver problems, recent stroke, heart attach, or low blood pressure, as well as rare eye diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa. Sildenafil should also never be taken in combination with other ED treatments.
What Conditions May Prevent the Use of Sildenafil?
Patients with an abnormally shaped penis probably should not use Sildenafil. Also, anyone suffering from diseases proven to cause prolonged erections (sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma, or leukemia) should not take Sildenafil. Bleeding disorders are also pre-existing conditions that would rule out Sildenafil. Should you have any other condition, consult your doctor to see if Sildenafil is right for you.
Can Women Take Sildenafil?
Women should NEVER take Sildenafil as it has not been tested or proven safe to take.
What Happens if I Increase the Dose?
One should never increase the dose without the consent of a doctor. Studies show that the effectiveness of Sildenafil when taken in amounts over the maximum 100mg does not increase, while the side effects increase dramatically.
Can I Take Sildenafil and Drive?
Sildenafil is known to cause dizziness and affect vision in some patients. Patients should first see how they react to the drug before driving or operating large machinery.
Does Sildenafil Work For Everyone?
Sildenafil has not been proven to work for all patients suffering from ED. Should you be taking Sildenafil and the effects are not what you had hoped for then please contact your doctor to find out about other treatments available. Information is also available at ErectionMagic.com
